Booking a plane ticket is a lot like playing the stock market. The options fluctuate in price at seemingly random intervals and the best price always seems to be wherever you aren't. But you're still going to travel this summer.


Americans travel most between June and September and airlines know it, shifting their prices about every 4.5 days. But, they all follow a trend, which means you can break into the system and purchase tickets at just the right moment.

CheapAir.com creates an annual air fare study, compiling and analyzing almost one billion airfare data points to determine the best time to book your air travel. They found that the best window to buy is between 76-47 days before your trip.

They also went a step further and forecasted the least expensive days to travel throughout the summer. Generally, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the cheapest days to fly, but there are some fluctuations with the ways the holidays fall this summer.

June: 1st, 3rd, 6th (very best), 7th, 13-15th

July: 4th (very best), 11-12th, 18-19th, 25-26th

August: 15-16th, 22nd (very best), 23rd, 26th, 30th

September: 6th, 12th (very best), 13th. 17th, 19-20th, 26-27th

Buying a ticket is always a gamble, so do do research on multiple sites. The more flexible you are with connections and departure/arrival times, the more likely you are to get a cheap flight. With all of that in mind, you are well equipped to book the least expensive flight out there and will save some pocket money for your destination.
