Hot on the heels of the Billy Ray Cyrus music video for “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X has released a new interpretation of the song that is garnering the attention of music fans from multiple genres.
The mini-movie is a five-minute take on time travel, starring Lil Nas and Billy Ray, but also featuring appearances from Chris Rock, Haha Davis, Rico Nasty, Diplo, Jozzy, Young Kio, an Vince Staples. It begins as a full-on western epic, complete with requisite horse chase, stolen money, and long dive down a mine shaft which is where the time jump takes place.
Whether it was intentional or not, the evolution seems to imply that maybe Lil Nas X is struggling with finding where he fits in. He admits feeling uncomfortable in the old west with BRC, but as he rides his horse in a more urban and current setting, garnering the stares and confusion of everyone whose path he crosses, there seems to be another type of discomfort, albeit tongue-in-cheek.
To Lil Nas X and the video director’s credit, there are several giggle-worthy moments, including the drag race between a hot rod and the singer’s horse where the cowboy and his steed smoke the car. When the driver exits the car, he comments, “OK, you got me, it’s all good. You cheated, though. That horse has got, like a V-12, but I ain’t even worried about it.”
They also seem to be having a blast crushing some stereotypes and celebrating the campiness of others. Lil Nas X and Billy Ray in embellished and fringed Manuel-type western wear is absolute life.
Only to be surpassed by Chris Rock channeling NASCAR’s Darrell Waltrip with his “boogity, boogity, boogity.”
