We’re only three weeks into season 18 of The Voice, but veteran coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton are already learning that newbie Nick Jonas is quick-witted, fun and has a keen ear for a great vocalist. They’re also learning he’s a force to be reckoned with. Thank goodness for that “block” button when Joei Fulco auditioned.

During the third night of Blind Auditions, with the coaches’ backs to her, Joei took the stage and ripped out a rendition of “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” that could make Cher’s knees buckle. Still, it took over a minute before a chair turned for the beauty. And it was Blake’s.

Fifteen seconds later a second chair turned — Nick’s. And in front of him…”BLOCKED!”

After Kelly complimented Joei on her uniquely textured vocal, Nick had an opportunity to speak. “As you can see, I thought you were amazing, but my friend, Blake, over here decided to cut me off,” he said.

Even though no one else could have blocked him since no one else turned around, Blake denied hitting the red button for Nick.

“He lies about it every time,” John explained. “He’s a liar. His nickname is ‘Block’ Shelton.” John went on to tell Joei, “I think you’re gonna go really far on this show, despite the fact you’re on Blake’s team.”

Blake then took a turn with his newest team member. “Joei, the Cher that’s in your voice, that’s what had me,” he said. “The fact that you’re bringing that sound to current music is what’s gonna set you apart from everybody else.”
