We can’t say with all certainty that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, but it seems quite possible after the incredibly emotional performance of “The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost” Craig Morgan gave on The Kelly Clarkson Show October 17.

Before Craig sang, though, he spent a little time chatting with Kelly who asked him to share the tragic story that led to his writing the inspiring, yet heartbreaking song. “I lost my son in a drowning accident three years ago,” he said. “I tell some of my friends, for them it happened three years ago but for me it was yesterday. And every day is yesterday,” He added, “Just like the song, he’s not physically here but he’s still very present in our lives.”

Craig went on to explain that one night he was woken up by the chorus of the song in his head. When he finally got out of bed, he completed the rest of the song in four hours. Before the song was sent to radio, he sent it to his longtime pal, Blake Shelton, and although the friends had spoken several times since Blake began his Twitter campaign promoting the tune, he hadn’t seen him in person.

As both Craig and Kelly blotted tears, the show host brought her surprise guest, Blake, to the stage.

After Blake had a chance to visit with his friends, Craig stepped behind the microphone to sing. With his eyes closed for much of the performance, it was obvious how difficult the song is to sing and as it drew to a close, he grew even more emotional, as did guest Eva Mendes and Kelly who rushed the stage sobbing to embrace her friend.
