It was a night to honor Dolly Parton at the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala honoring the iconic singer Friday night (Feb. 8). Dolly’s Goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, along with pop star Shawn Mendes were on hand to celebrate Dolly with a rocking rendition of “Islands in the Stream.”

“This is the best night ever. We just get to listen to Dolly Parton songs, this is the best,” Miley said before breaking into the the 1983 duet Dolly made popular with Kenny Rogers.

Islands in the stream / That is what we are / No one in-between
How can we be wrong / Sail away with me to another world / And we rely on each other, ah-ah / From one lover to another, ah-ah,” they sing in the chorus.

Prior to the event, Miley revealed her excitement for the night. “I’m just looking forward to listening to all her songs tonight and not having to listen to anything else,” Miley told People. “I listened to a station the other day called Dolly Radio and they started playing other artists. And I thought, ‘No! I only want to listen to Dolly when I’m listening to Dolly Radio.’ Tonight, it’s all Dolly songs.”

Dolly was chosen for the event because of her “unparalleled contributions to country music and a multitude of charitable causes, including the children’s literacy organization she started in 1995, Imagination Library, with which she has donated over 100 million books to kids around the world.” This is the first time an artist from the Nashville community will be honored with the award.

Two nights later, Dolly was honored at the Grammy Awards by fellow performers Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Katy Perry and more.
