Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood finally found time in their busy schedules to celebrate the No. 1 status of their collaboration, “The Fighter.”

The uptempo tune hit the top of the charts back in 2017, but trying to get Keith, Carrie and songwriter/producer busbee all together on the same day, proved harder than one would think. So on Monday, Aug. 6 all three were able to get together with friends, family and industry folk to recognize the honor.

Keith, Carrie and busbee took the stage for a lively rendition of the “The Fighter,” before each saying a few words. Keith took the first verse with Carrie singing her part, followed by busbee taking the second verse just before Carrie and Keith wailed on the closing.

“It’s been such an honor to be a part of this song, Thank you guys so much for trusting me with this. One of my favorite parts about this whole process other than getting to work with these two, was the demo that I got sent and it was all busbee doing the girl stuff. Which is pretty awesome, so thank you for that little gift. I saved it. It’s going to come back to haunt you at some point,” Carrie joked before going on to rave about Keith.

Then Keith took the stage to thank Carrie and busbee for their time before giving the story behind “The Fighter,” and thanking his wife, actress Nicole Kidman.

“I need to give a huge thank you to my wife for inspiring this song. It was so easy to write because it was born of a real conversation that we had had before we got married and me trying to reassure my wife that I was a good bet,” Keith laughed. “That I was a safe place and that I would take care of her and she could remain vulnerable and precious and that I would try and keep the world away from her so that she didn’t have to be hardened.

“They talk about people having to have a thick skin and I don’t agree with that. I think you should be vulnerable and be a spirit and be real and maybe if people would stop being so harsh, especially to ourselves sometimes too, we wouldn’t have to have thick skins. We could just be a little more what we are which is pure spirit and fragile and real. Real people, human beings.”

The crowd erupted in applause as the drinks and hors d’oeuvre flowed. “The Fighter” is Keith’s 21st No. 1 hit throughout the course of his career.
