Kelly Clarkson has been delighting audiences with hit songs during her current 2019 Meaning of Life Tour, which kicked off Jan. 24. During her performance on Saturday (Jan. 26) in Los Angeles, the superstar got all choked up as she performed the song “Piece by Piece.”
The heartbreaking mid-tempo ballad had the mother of two singing about finding someone who restores her faith in what a father should be, after having her faith broken by her own father. Kelly’s parents divorced when she was young and her relationship with her father has remained strained.
“But piece by piece, he collected me up / Off the ground, where you abandoned things / Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me / Six years old and you know / He never walks away / He never asks for money / He takes care of me / He loves me / Piece by piece, he restores my faith /That a man can be kind and the father could, stay,” she sings in the chorus.
“It’s because my kids are here,” she said mid-song.

It’s not the first time Kelly was brought to tears while singing the song. The “Stronger” singer performed it on “The American Idol” farewell season and not only brought herself to tears but had Keith Urban and the audience crying as well.
“I’ve been fine the last two shows. My kids are this one,” she explained her tears to the audience. “Once you have kids, it’s one of those things that I can’t even fathom—about not sticking around and caring. I just can’t even fathom.”
