Kelsea Ballerini broke countless chart records for females in the country genre with her debut album and subsequent No. 1 hits, and the singer is opening up about her success and the role she’s taken to empower women.

In a new interview with Zac Posen for the second episode of “Loud and Clear” from Yahoo Lifestyle, the “I Hate Love Songs” singer discusses how she hopes to influence women and change the dialog when it comes to the way female artists are portrayed in the media.

“I made a promise to myself that when I got signed as an artist, that I would be the same person on Instagram as I was out to dinner with my friends as I was onstage,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Because my favorite artists are the ones that you feel like you can reach out and touch, not the ones that are in a glass box.”

When asked if she thinks celebrities should get involved in politics and social issues, the singer admits that she personally chooses not to and instead uses her platform to empower women.

“I feel like my job is to be positive and encouraging and empowering to women. And that’s kind of what I speak about through my music and that’s what I use my platform for and what I feel really, really strongly about, and I feel like that’s the influence I can make,” she says.

She adds, “I’m constantly seeing articles and people posting about, ‘Who’s your country queen? This person or this person?’ It makes all of us feel like there’s only one spot. And then when you feel like there’s only one spot, even if you want to be friends with all the other girls, there’s this weird, negative, competitive energy in the room that makes you feel awkward and like you can’t be their friend.”

The happily married singer also admits that she vowed to never date another artist but things changed once she met fellow singer Morgan Evans. Currently, her message is to live life unapologetically and she admits this is why she named her sophomore album Unapologetically.

“It’s called ‘Unapologetically,’ and to me, that means you choose to ignore what everything says and listen to your heart. It’s just important to listen to yourself and trust yourself.”
