The song is a sweet and tender message to the little ones who stay behind while their parents make a living on the road, serve overseas in the military or anywhere that takes them away for hours or days. Lines like, “Food on the table, brand new cradle for the angel that’s coming in a minute, this house and everybody in it,” also serve as a gratitude checklist for the one that has to leave.

The music video for “What I’m Leaving For” gives fans a visual element of those things that Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott are grateful for. Home movies and snapshots from their personal scrapbooks show all six of their little ones at various stages in their lives, doing the things that fill their days—playing, napping, eating, learning and growing—as well as their spouses who keep things running at home.’

Throughout the video, we also see Charles, Dave and Hillary delivering enthusiastic and joyful performances which gives fans an idea of the push-pull they experience between leaving their families at home to be with their families on the road. And a whole new level of respect for their career choice emerges.

In a post on her Instagram page, Hillary shares a snippet of the video, but it’s her caption that is most poignant.

She writes, “This song is my heart in 3 minutes and 24 seconds. Other parents, especially Mamas…I hope no matter what kind of stage you find yourself on every day—whether it’s to an office, classroom, an airport or a deployment—that this song resonates with you. It’s a beautiful and weighty mix of emotions to raise little humans—our hearts living outside of our chests. ❤️ Love y’all!”
