LeAnn Rimes Reimagines “One Way Ticket” As A Slow, Heartbreaking Ballad

-

It has, shockingly, been more than 20 years since LeAnn Rimes first released “One Way Ticket (Because I Can).” The cover was her first and only No. 1 hit and cemented her as a deft modernizer of classic country tunes. Today, she can see the heartbreak of the song and has reimagined the song as sung by someone with a broken heart.

“One Way Ticket (Re-imagined)” takes a stripped-down approach to the 1999 windows down, wind-in-your-hair, tune with an emotional approach she didn’t understand as a teenager.

“At 13 years old, I didn’t fully grasp the deeper meaning behind the lyric,” Rimes told Rolling Stone Country. “After all these years, while re-imagining some of my hits for my Remnants Tour last year, we stumbled upon a slower tempo which I believe truly shines a light on the vulnerability and the courage of the lyric.”

We want to be resolved, tough, and resolute after heartbreak. We want to move on undaunted. But that courage often hides a brokenness that no one-way ticket can outrun. Rimes nailed it.
