Luke Combs visited “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday evening (July 17), where he captivated the New York studio audience with his booming vocals and introspective lyrics. Ahead of his performance, the late-night host introduced Luke and revealed that he’d be performing a track off his debut album, This One’s For You, which went platinum earlier that day.
An impressive feat, the singer then began to play his previous chart topper, “One Number Away,” which he co-wrote with Sammy Mitchell, Steven Andre Battey and Robert Williford. Luke’s powerful vocals were at the forefront of the song, which details a man not quite over his ex who finds himself one number away from calling her. Backed by stirring pedal steel, pulsating beats and a memorable guitar riff, the song left its mark on the audience.
“One Number Away” is Luke’s third-consecutive No. 1 hit. It follows debut single, “Hurricane,” and its follow-up, “When It Rains It Pours.” The latter is a fan favorite and has had many country listeners intrigued by one specific line: “Bought two twelve packs.”
“Why did you buy two 12 packs and not a case?” one fan asked the singer on Twitter. Luke replied, saying, “Finally answering the question I get asked the most. I bought two twelve packs instead of a case because it was on sale!!!”
With three back-to-back hits, Luke probably doesn’t need to be paying too much attention to the sale prices these days. The singer is currently on the road throughout the summer with Jason Aldean as part of the High Noon Neon Tour and is evidently having a blast. He’ll head to Chicago later this summer where he is set to perform as part of Lollapalooza on Aug. 4.
