Maren Morris is speaking out for women in country music with her new single, “Girl.” Penned with Sarah Aarons and Greg Kurstin, the song was inspired by the current climate of women at country radio and reassures females everywhere that “everything’s gonna be okay, baby.” It is the first single off her forthcoming sophomore studio album.
“Looking at the country radio chart the last year, more titles had the word ‘girls’ in them than actual girls on the radio,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I think in my head I wanted to buck the trend a little bit and be like, ‘I’m a girl, and I’m going to sing about a girl, and I’m the girl.”
“‘GIRL’ is officially out. I’m sobbing all the happy tears. This song pulled something out of my soul the day we wrote it and I couldn’t shake it. I hope it brings some comfort and peace to your inner critic. Love yourselves and love each other,” she shares on Twitter.

The song kicks off with an ear-grabbing guitar riff before Maren comes in and reveals she’s trying to pick herself up off the kitchen floor.
“When the sh–‘s unflattering / All up in my head again / I don’t feel myself right now / Maybe I should just lay down / If vanity’s my vitamin, but I don’t feel the difference / I don’t like myself right now / Gotta find a way out,” she croons.
“I was writing it as a letter to another girl who I felt had disrespected me and was constantly trying to be competitive with me when I just wanted to exist in my own space,” she tells Rolling Stone. “But as we kept writing it, I realized I’m not talking to someone else — I’m talking to myself.
“I am talking to my inner critic that says I’m not good enough,” she continues. “This is me telling myself it’s going to be OK and to chill the f–k out. Just write your music and put your blinders on. Don’t worry about what other people are doing or saying about you. Don’t water yourself down to appease them. Just focus on your art and the rest will fall into place.”
Fans will get a chance to hear Maren perform “Girl” live on her upcoming Girl: The World Tour, which kicks off on March 9 with openers Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn.
