Earlier this year, right before the GRAMMYs, Maren Morris revealed that she was working on something super secret. That was followed up by a corporate deal with Target and major music video that debuted during the GRAMMYs Awards.
Maren had recorded a pop song with Zedd and Grey called, “The Middle“. And it was catchy as hell. So catchy that its already reached No. 1 on multiple Billboard charts.
While Maren is an obvious perfect fit for the song, 14 other vocalists actually recorded demos for the tune before she did. Maren’s vocals were chosen over pop powerhouses Demi Lovato, Camila Cabello, Anne-Marie, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo, Bishop Briggs, Bebe Rexha, Lauren Jauregui from Fifth Harmony, Daya and Elle King.
And that’s just one way the tune came together. Zedd, Grey, songwriter Sarah Aarons and producers Monsters & Strangerz detailed how it all came to be during a recent New York Times Diary of a Song piece and it’s actually pretty fascinating.
For her part, Maren shared, “I didn’t really know about all the drama finding a vocalist.”
The day the song was released, Zedd shared an Instagram photo saying, “We’ve worked sooooo hard on “The Middle” to get it just right and it feels soooooooooooo good to finally share it.”
