As many fans as Chris Stapleton has, it would be hard to find anyone who was mad about his performance with pop star Pink at the 53rd annual CMA Awards. Even though it was a country music award show, the pair opted to perform the tender, stirring ballad “Love Me Anyway” from Pink’s most recent album, Hard 2B Human.

Modest and humble, Chris stood a few steps behind Pink, even when he began singing, but his distinctive and powerful voice didn’t require him to step forward. In fact, when they reached a portion of the song where Pink was asking “could you” and Chris was embellishing with his brand of warm grit, the pop star’s face broke into a broad smile, in spite of the serious tone of the song.

As the tune progressed and both of the singers settled into their parts, the mutual rich, gutsiness of their respective vocals made them seem more alike than different, and the performance became mesmerizing for listeners.

Having Pink as the featured performer with the assist from Chris also seemed more in keeping with the theme of the show that mostly promoted female voices. And let’s be honest — Chris will likely be in the country music family for a long, long time. Who knows when Pink might stop back in for a visit…but she’s always welcome.
