On August 23, 2010, Ryan Hurd’s little brother, Andrew, was killed in a car accident at the age of 16. 8 years later, Ryan is now married to Maren Morris and building a life in Nashville— but not without carrying his grief and remembrance of his late brother with him.

Ryan took to Instagram to share a picture of Andrew, along with a heartfelt message about grief:

“We lost this kid 8 years ago today. I am usually very guarded publicly but I just wish that every single one of you could have known how special my little brother Andrew was. I’ve watched my Mom and my Dad have to learn how to live after losing a child. I’ve seen my brother and especially my little sister grow up and become exceptional people in the face of unspeakable grief,” he said.

“I wish Maren could have gotten to know that part of me that we can only talk about now, but mostly we just miss him. Even at 16, he was remarkable. If you care to know more, there is a link in my bio to his biography that I wrote only a month after he passed. Nothing can ever make it ok, but we are all so proud that we got to know him, and if you are living with loss right now, I hope that you read this like it’s a giant hug from the Hurds just for you. Love you buddy. Miss you every day.”

Maren commented on Ryan’s post, saying, “I didn’t know Andrew but I see him in every picture and every memory of my beautiful Hurd family. I feel so blessed to be in your life and hope that he would have been proud of our love. I love you so much, Ryan. You’re the best big brother.”
