When Taylor Swift released her 2020 tour dates, fans were disappointed to see that the superstar wasn’t launching a mega-tour as she has done in the past after releasing new music. After dropping Lover in August of 2019, she shared the sixteen shows she would be playing in 2020, starting in June. Now, we learn that one of the reasons behind her abbreviated tour is that the cancer that Taylor’s mother, Andrea, has been battling has returned for a second time along with a brain tumor.

According to Variety, while filming the Netflix documentary on Taylor’s life, Miss Americana, Andrea, who was first diagnosed in 2015, was going through chemotherapy.

“While she was going through treatment, they found a brain tumor,” Taylor reveals. “And the symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family.”

She also explains, “We don’t know what is going to happen. We don’t know what treatment we’re going to choose. It just was the decision to make at the time, for right now, for what’s going on.”

Taylor does take some of the pressure off of the family saying that another reason her tour schedule seems lighter is because “I wanted to be able to perform in places that I hadn’t performed in as much, and to do things I hadn’t done before, like Glastonbury, I feel like I haven’t done festivals, really, since early in my career — they’re fun and bring people together in a really cool way. But I also wanted to be able to work as much as I can handle right now, with everything that’s going on at home. And I wanted to figure out a way that I could do both those things.”
