Social media was on fire on June 30 after news of Big Machine Label Group—the former record label home of Taylor Swift—sold for over $300-million dollars to entertainment executive Scooter Braun. Normally, this would have been business as usual in the music industry; however, as Taylor allegedly learned about the the sale, the story began to unfold.

Billboard shared the news of the exchange between Scooter Braun and former BMLG owner, Scott Borchetta, and shared some details of the agreement, including that Scott would remain in place as the head of the label and that the label would retain Taylor’s catalog from her years at Big Machine.

Shortly after the news broke, Taylor took to Tumbler explaining why this transaction was her “worst case scenario.”

Taylor wrote, “For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead, I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.”

She went on to elaborate on her distress. “I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years,” she wrote. “Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

Although Taylor is no longer on Big Machine (she’s now with Universal Music Group), she did add, “When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”

Scott has since taken to the Big Machine website to rebut some of Taylor’s comments. He wrote, “Out of courtesy, I personally texted Taylor at 9:06pm, Saturday, June 29th to inform her prior to the story breaking on the morning of Sunday, June 30th so he could hear it directly from me. While he says that it is possible that she didn’t see his text, he writes, “I truly doubt that she ‘woke up to the news when everyone else did.’”

He also addressed the relationship between Taylor and Scooter saying, “As to her comments about ‘being in tears or close to it,’ anytime my new partner Scooter Braun’s name was brought up, I certainly never experienced that. Was I aware of some prior issues between Taylor and Justin Bieber? Yes. But there was also times where Taylor knew that I was close to Scooter and that Scooter was a very good source of information for upcoming album releases, tours, etc, and I’d reach out to him for information on our behalf. Scooter was never anything but positive about Taylor.” Scott went on to say, “Scooter has always been and will continue to be a supporter an honest custodian for Taylor and her music.”

Justin has also responded to the accusations and his role in the controversy with a post on his Instagram page where he both apologizes to Taylor for his hurtful post, then defends Scooter, explaining that he has always had her back.

“Hey Taylor. First of all i would like to apologize for posting that hurtful instagram post, at the time i thought it was funny but looking back it was distasteful and insensitive..,” he wrote. “I have to be honest though it was my caption and post that I screenshoted of scooter and Kanye that said “taylor swift what up” he didnt have anything to do with it and it wasnt even a part of the conversation in all actuality he was the person who told me not to joke like that.”

He continued, “Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you.! As the years have passed we haven’t crossed paths and gotten to communicate our differences, hurts or frustrations. So for you to take it to social media and get people to hate on scooter isn’t fair. What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter. Anyway, One thing i know is both scooter and i love you. I feel like the only way to resolve conflict is through communication. So banter back and fourth online i dont believe solves anything. I’m sure Scooter and i would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain or or any feelings that need to be addressed. Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you. I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone i loves character thats crossing a line..”
