Taylor Swift Gets Emotional During Concert on Anniversary of Sexual Assault Trial

-

Just last year, Taylor Swift won a sexual assault case against former DJ David Mueller after she claimed he had groped her during a photo op in 2013.

Following the verdict, Swift released a statement in which she claimed a victory for all women, “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”

Now, a year later, Taylor is out on her Reputation tour in full force— but, rightfully so, she hasn’t forgotten what she went through. During one of her tour stops in Tampa, Florida, Taylor sat at her piano and fought back tears.

“This day a year ago was the day that the jury decided in my favor and said they believed me,” she started. “I guess I just think about all of the people who weren’t believed and the people who haven’t been believed and the people who are afraid to speak up because they’re afraid they won’t be believed.”

She went on to say she’s sorry for those who haven’t been believed, saying we as a society have a long way to go when it comes to issues of this nature.

“I just wanted to say that I’m sorry to anyone who ever wasn’t believed because I don’t know what turn my life would’ve taken if people didn’t believe me when I said something had happened to me.”

She closed by thanking her fans for supporting her over the years.

“I just wanted to say that we have so so so much further to go and I’m so grateful to you guys for being there for me during what was a really horrible part of my life. You guys have seen me go through so many ups and downs in my life. I’m so happy to see you, to have you and to know you through the ups and downs of my life.”
