Country stars love recording a great collaboration and country fans love hearing them, so hearing that Trisha Yearwood had invited her good pal Kelly Clarkson into the studio to record a tune for her upcoming Every Girl album wasn’t surprising, but it did send a ripple of extreme enthusiasm and anticipation through fans of both of these incredible vocalists.

Fortunately, on July 25, well ahead of the album’s August release date, music lovers got their first listen to “Workin’ on Whiskey.”

While the lyric is filled with heartbreak and longing, and the angst in both Trisha and Kelly’s voices is palpable, the arrangement is a 3/4 waltz that pulses with every strike of the kick drum, making it feel like a clock winding down and that recovery from this broken heart could take an eternity and creating an ache you feel in your bones.

If that wasn’t magic enough, Trisha and Kelly’s voices are so similar that transitions are seamless and harmonies take on a velvety deliciousness that is almost soothing in spite of the obvious suffering.

The response on social media has been overwhelmingly supportive of the new tune as fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts. @chanfrost2 tweeted, “To be honest, I don’t think the world is prepared for @trishayearwood new album. The 2 songs we have are enough to drop a grown man to his knees” and @cdest86 wrote, “I’m gonna say it…#WorkinOnWhiskey is officially one of my Top 5 favorite @trishayearwood songs of all time!”

Sure, we know it isn’t like Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson have never worked together. The pair appeared on Trisha’s Southern Kitchen during season four and, heck, they even sang together with Reba McEntire on Kelly’s Cautionary Christmas Tale holiday special, on Reba’s Sing It Now: Song of Faith & Hope, and even during CMA Music Festival back in 2013.

But, as we hope artists do, these ladies have taken it up a notch.

Or 20.
