As someone who reviews, listens to and attends concerts as a part of their job, it’s hard for me to always know what I really like, versus who I really like as a person or a songwriter. Usually, I can gauge my true feelings on a song or album if I listened to it outside of the office or put it on a playlist for a certain event or occasion.

This year, I had a few songs I was certainly stuck on and looking back, they were all for different reasons.

Brandy Clark’s “You’re Drunk,” Carly Pearce’s “Hide The Wine” and Kelsea Ballerini’s “I Hate Love Songs” were witty, yet empowering.

Jason Isbell’s “Anxiety” and Little Big Town’s “Beat Up Bible,” just punched me in the gut and made me think and feel.

Kip Moore’s “Blonde” and Midland’s “Drinkin’ Problem” featured unreal lyrics and perfect delivery.

Then, there were the surprises like Luke Combs’ “When It Rains It Pours” and Jon Pardi’s “Heartache on the Dance Floor.” I have no idea why I couldn’t turn those songs off, but I couldn’t.

And, of course, 2017 marked new albums for Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift, both pushing boundaries and limits in pop music that they created in the first place.
