Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell have been teasing fans with their new single, “What Happens In a Small Town,” for the past few days. But the wait is over and the new duet with the country singers has arrived.
“What Happens in a Small Town,” written by Brantley, Brock Berryhill, Josh Dunne and Rhett Akins, has the two friends singing about a couple who broke up but is constantly reminded of what they had from different locales around the town they live in. Because after all, “what happens in a small town stays in a small town.”
“This song builds and burns,” Brantley said in a statement. “It really has that want for someone you can’t have, and having to live in all the places they are.”
“What happens in a small town / Stays in a small town / Every back road we’ve ever gone down / Friday night bleachers, Sunday pews / Ain’t a county line mile without a memory of you,” they sing on the chorus.
In a video on posted to Instagram, Lindsay and Brantley talk about coming together for their new duet.
“I was just leaning towards a duet,” Brantley said. “I’d never done one. We kind of just got excited about it and I don’t think that excitement ever stopped.”
“I was just taken aback from the song,” Lindsay adds. “I remember listening to it for the first time, and from a minute in I’m like, ‘wow, this is just something really special.’”
“What Happens in a Small Town” is available now.
