Cam finally released her video for “Diane”, her celebrated song about the other woman. Cam embodies a woman who entered an affair with a man she didn’t know was married and, upon realizing he was married, calls the wife to try and make things right. The video puts that story into vintage country visuals that serve to make the story even more powerful.

“Diane” is the flip side of the “woman scorned” country trope. Its apologetic tone makes it more analogous to the Dolly Parton’s pleading “Jolene” than Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)”, earnestly trying to make the infidelity she made right. By flipping the point of view to the woman the man left for, Cam gives a small piece of peace to those who have lived through the real thing.

“It’s the apology so many spouses deserve, but never get,” Cam said in a press release. “The other woman is coming forward to break the news to the wife about an affair, respecting her enough to have that hard conversation, once she realized he was married. And in true country fashion, I’ve set the whole raw story to upbeat music, so you can dance while you process it all.”

The video balances the fun tone with retro visuals that harken back to Dolly and Loretta while telling a somber story love and deception.

“The general theme of women speaking to women and being honest in a really difficult situation that neither one of them chose,” she said in an interview with People. “I wanted to make sure that a lot of people that have been through this feel like this wasn’t sensationalized — because this is a lot of people’s story. I’ve seen people in crowds now that sing the s— out of this song; they’re owning all these lyrics. So I wanted to get it right and make it raw and real and mean something. Actually, I took acting lessons to make sure I didn’t mess that up!”

She didn’t mess it up. She made it great.
