Carrie Underwood’s “Cry Pretty” is An Emotional Look Back at the Last Year and You’ll Like It

-

Carrie Underwood last released new music in 2016 with the single, “Dirty Laundry,” from her 2015 album, Storyteller. To say new music from Underwood is a welcomed-listen would be an understatement to most fans and the superstar’s new tune, “Cry Pretty” almost serves as an apology for the delay.

Prior to releasing the song, written with Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose, and Lori McKennaUnderwood shared a letter with fans detailing the last few months and her injuries following a fall last November. But, she also opened up about working on new music and shared that “Cry Pretty” was written in Nashville and that “The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back. It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life. It’s emotional. It’s real.”

Underwood is right– the song is full of emotion and full of several big runs for Underwood that will definitely provide a few huge moments when performed live. At times, the lyrics do feel a bit clunky, but that is where the realness comes in. It’s hard to fake emotion and there’s plenty of that here.

“Cry Pretty” Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
I’m sorry
But I’m just a girl not usually the kind to show my heart to the world
I’m pretty good at keeping it together
I hold my composure, for worse or for better
So I apologize
If you don’t like what you see
But sometimes my emotions get the best of me
And falling apart is as human as it gets
You can’t hide it
You can’t fight
But the truth is

[Chorus]
You can pretty lie
And say it’s okay
You can pretty smile
And just walk away
Pretty much make your way through anything
But, you can’t cry pretty

[Verse 2]
Oh no, you can’t dress it up in lace or rhinestones
Don’t matter if you’re in a crowd or home alone
Yeah, it’s all the same when you’re looking in the mirror
A pinch or a pain
So let it flow like a river

[Chorus]
You can pretty lie
And say it’s okay
You can pretty smile
And just walk away
Pretty much make your way through anything
But, you can’t cry pretty

[Bridge]
You can’t turn off the flood when the dam breaks
When all your mascara is going to waste
When things get ugly
You just got to face you can’t cry pretty
Oh, no, you can’t
You can’t turn off the flood when the dam breaks
When all your mascara is going to waste
When things get ugly
You just got to face you can’t cry pretty

Underwood hasn’t any new album or tour details, but those should be coming soon. And yes, if you hear Faith Hill’s “Cry” at times, you aren’t alone.
