Country music has had it’s share of sadness and tragedy this past year, including the loss of country great Glen Campbell, the sudden death of Montgomery Gentry’s Troy Gentry and the horrific mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, that killed 58 country fans and injured countless others.

As sorrow loomed over the genre, country music did what it does best at the 51st Annual CMA Awards, hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, which is come together as a family and heal together.

“This has been a year marked by tragedy, impacting countless lives, including so many in our country music family. So tonight, we’re going to do what families do: come together, pray together, cry together, and sing together, too,” Carrie Underwood said at the opening of the show.

As the artists shared their music, the night was filled with love, laughter and tributes to those lost. But it was Carrie Underwood who had the most beautiful performance of the night, bringing the audience and herself to tears. The Oklahoma native took to the stage to perform a powerful rendition of “Softly and Tenderly,” as images of the people we lost played in the background.

Brad Paisley was right when he said “I predict that the highlight of our show is Carrie…that’s my prediction,” on “Good Morning America” the day before the show. It most certainly was.
