Chris Young was recognized with the inaugural Charlie Daniels Patriot Award on Sept. 18 in Nashville, Tenn. The “Hangin’ On” singer was honored at the Charlie Daniels Patriot Award Dinner, which benefited The Journey Home Project (TJHP) which is a not-for profit organization that helps to secure funds to help causes that benefit veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

“I am immensely grateful to our military and their families for the sacrifices they make for our country and incredibly humbled to receive the Patriot Award honor from Charlie and The Journey Home Project,” Chris says in a statement.

Chris was recognized for his support of the United States military. The singer has made multiple trips overseas throughout the years, performing for troops stationed in the Middle East, South Korea and Japan. The award itself is given to honor a person who exemplifies the efforts and dedication to fulfill the mission of The Journey Home Project, which supports veterans in their return, rehabilitation and reintegration back into civilian life.

Helping the military is close to the singer’s heart as his sister is a marine. Chris recently shared a sweet message about his sister on Instagram following his honor. At the awards dinner, Chris also performed a song about the military.

“Photo of my little sister(a marine now home working and simultaneously raising my niece:)) watching me perform a song about the military after receiving an award for my work for veterans,” he captions the image. “My mom took this photo and Dot didn’t even know. I love this person so much. Yes she is my sister. BUT She is also a complete and total badass. She is an incredible mother. And she is one of the best friends I have ever had. She is an inspiration for her daughter and she doesn’t even know it. I love you little sister! Keep inspiring me to be a better person every day!”
