Chris Young has been enlisting fans’ help to choose which classic country artists he should cover and this week’s installment is Merle Haggard. A way to promote his new single, “Raised On Country,” which drops on Jan. 4, Chris revisits some of the artists who helped shape his love of country music.

“This is it! The final #RaisedOnCountry cover that you voted on – Merle Haggard!” he captions a clip of him singing Merle’s popular song “Silver Wings.” “Enjoy and don’t forget my new single drops tonight at midnight!”

In the short video, Chris is seen with his guitar player as he belts the famous song featured on Merle’s 1969 release A Portrait of Merle Haggard. While “Silver Wings” was never released as a single, it became one of Merle’s most popular songs to play live. The mournful track has a man begging his love not to leave and Chris sings the stirring lines with conviction.

“Don’t leave me, I cried / Don’t take that airplane ride / But you locked me out of your mind / And left me standing here behind,” Chris sings.

This is just one of several covers Chris has shared with fans in anticipation of his new single. The singer has previously covered Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee” as well as George Strait’s “The Fireman.”

Chris has also shared a snippet of his new single on social media ahead of its release tonight at midnight. “Got a little southern drawl in my talk / A little pickup truck on my highway / Got a little boot stomp in my walk / Little neon light in my Friday / Got some Tennessee in my whiskey / Raise a cup up if you’re with me,” he sings.
