Colton Smith and Patrique Fortson blew the coaches away during the first battle round of Season 15 of “The Voice” Monday night (Oct. 15). Performing Blake Shelton’s 2011 hit “God Gave Me You,” previously released the year prior by singer/songwriter Dave Barnes, Colton and Patrique put their jaw-dropping spin on the love ballad.
While Blake and Dave’s recording of the song was more of a tender ballad, both Colton and Patrique put a powerful and soulful spin on the track. Their two-minute performance had the judges floored with impressive range and vocal gymnastics only seen from veterans in the industry. Suffice it to say, each made it through the battle round.
Coach Jennifer Hudson was so impressed with the performance that she threw her shoe at the two singers. “That was great!” she exclaimed following their duet. JHud selected the song for the teammates to sing and this choice showed that she knows exactly what she’s doing as a coach. While she ultimately chose Patrique as the winner of the round, Blake couldn’t pass on Colton’s vocal talent.
“[That was] maybe what it should have been, to begin with,” Blake said of the powerful cover. He then saved Colton from being eliminated by stealing him for Team Blake.
“You just took my song to a new level,” Blake marveled. “From one vocalist to another, respect.”
