Forty years ago as America celebrated its bicentennial, country music superstars Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan were newborns. Other headlines from 1976 suggest it was a lot like this one– the Olympics were held in Montreal, Jimmy Carter was elected President of the United States of America, weird things were happening to celebrities, people were doing terrible things and country music was at its best.

The 1976 CMA Awards featured Johnny Cash as host, Dolly Parton as the Female Vocalist of the Year and a slew of nominations and wins for Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. The Song of the Year was Glen Campbell‘s “Rhinestone Cowboy” and the Single of the Year was”Good Hearted Woman” from Jennings and Nelson, but what were some other favorites from the year? Would they still be hits today? Are they classics now?

15 Weird and Wonderful Songs Songs from 1976:

  • “Good Hearted Woman” might have been the tune that launched Jennings and Nelson to national prominence. And now, it’s an absolute classic.
  • Written by legendary songwriter Bobby Braddock, “Golden Ring” is the story of a ring and what it truly stands for. George Jones and Tammy Wynette released the tune a year after their very public and tumultuous divorce.
  • “Teddy Bear” is definitely one that likely wouldn’t be played much today. It’s the tale of a young paraplegic boy looking to talk to truckers on a CB radio. Pretty sad, kind of weird and at 5 minutes long, the fact that it’s spoken and not sung means radio success wouldn’t be likely in 2016.
  • “Dropkick me, Jesus” is so full of metaphors it’s like a middle school writing assignment gone terrible right or wrong.
  • Linda Ronstadt covered the Buddy Holly classic on her 1976 GRAMMY-winning album, Hasten Down the Wind. It peaked at No. 11 on the country charts.
Some of these other tunes would definitely have a hard time getting on the charts today, but they are still so good.
