Dan + Shay were glued to the GRAMMY website on Friday (Dec. 7), anxiously anticipating the 2019 GRAMMY Awards nominations. During an interview with New York radio station Nash FM 94.7, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney admit that it’s still a shock to hear people refer to them as a GRAMMY-nominated duo.

“It’s a dream come true,” Dan says of their two nominations. “It really is. We were surprised this morning when we woke up and saw it. It’s tough competition to get a nomination. There are a lot of people making country music and to see our name on the list is really cool. [It’s] something we never had before.”

Dan + Shay were recognized in the category of Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their hit “Tequila” while the track’s songwriters (Dan, Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds) were also nominated for Best Country Song.

“I was refreshing the website waiting for it. I’m on the website and I was refreshing it at 8:44, 8:45, just hoping,” Dan admits. “You never expect it. It’s been a good year for us and I was like, ‘Maybe, just maybe.’ Then I saw it come up and it was crazy.”

The station’s deejay then asked which band member screamed the loudest once he learned about their two nominations. Shay quickly confessed it was him.

“I screamed pretty loud when we found out,” he says.

Following the announcement, Shay revealed that the GRAMMY announcement came six years to the day they first met at a party. “Emotion level: maximum,” the duo write on Twitter.
