Dierks Bentley’s “What the Hell Did I Say” May Be the Fourth Single From ‘Black’ But It Was One of the First Songs He Wanted on the Album

Dierks Bentley is a big fan of his current single “What the Hell Did I Say” and he has been since the first time he heard it.

The tune, which was penned by Ross Copperman, Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins, was actually one of the first songs he was drawn to for his Black album.

“I’m always looking for a song or an idea or a theme or a sound that’s going to make me excited to work on the next project,” Dierks told One Country and other media outlets at the No. 1 party for “Black.” “I heard that song and I wasn’t sure how it would fit into anything but I just loved that song. It’s just so good.”

Then it found new life when it came time for the tour with Jon Pardi and Cole Swindell.

“We were looking for a tour name and I was thinking about having two single guys out on the road with me, and knowing Pardi like I know him. How many mornings have I been asking myself what the hell happened last night?” Dierks admitted.

He went on to say that “Pick Up” and his duet with Maren Morris “I’ll Be the Moon” with both favorite for the next single, but “What the Hell Did I Say” was just right.
