Dolly Parton Recalls The Time She Lost A Dolly Parton Look-Alike Contest

Dolly Parton has been everywhere promoting her new children’s album “I Believe in You,” this week. On Tuesday (Oct. 31) the country legend stopped by Harry Connick Jr.’s daytime talk show, “Harry.”

The singer stopped by on Halloween, dressed as a perfect version of Veruca Salt complete with the goose that laid the golden eggs from “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.” If you’re not familiar with Veruca Salt, shame on you, go watch the movie, but Veruca was the character that wanted everything she saw and demanded that she get what she wants. However that’s neither here nor there.

For the show’s tribute to Gene Wilder, Dolly dressed as the “Willy Wonka” character during the Halloween episode, but when she sat down with Harry, she told of a time when she dressed as an over-exaggerated for Halloween and entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest. That’s not all. The 71-year-old legend LOST the contest.

“Me and a bunch of friends decided to go down {to a local gay bar] because we were all dressed up, and me being Dolly. They had these big drag queens—I mean they looked great too, they were prettier than I could ever dream of being—but anyway when they walked across the stage, if they applauded, you won the contest by the amount of applause,” Dolly explained. “All these beautiful guys were walking across, these Dolly Parton’s, and here I come walking across the stage and I got the least applause of anybody. I’ve always said it’s terrible when you lose a Dolly Parton look-alike contest.”
