Let’s face it. High profile relationships of entertainers often don’t survive the spotlight and
scrutiny of the public, so when they do, it is definitely cause to celebrate. It’s also an opportunity to find out the secrets of superstar marriages like Dolly Parton and husband Carl Dean’s 52- year relationship.
In an interview with People Magazine, Dolly revealed that the reason she and Carl have had such a lasting romance is because, well, they just aren’t together that much.
“I always joke and laugh when people ask me what’s the key to my long marriage and lasting love,” says Dolly, “I always say ‘Stay gone!’ and there’s a lot of truth to that. I travel a lot, but we really enjoy each other when we’re together and the little things we do.”
When they are together, Dolly and Carl don’t go for high profile nights out—“We know a few little places we can go without being bothered. He only likes to go places where he can be comfortable!”
In fact, their idea of going out is a little more…rustic. They pack up their “little camper” and picnic in bucolic Tennessee.
When Dolly and Carl tied the knot 52 years ago, they eloped to tiny Ringgold, Georgia, denying the country star the grand nuptials that so many little girls wish for. For their big anniversary this year, Dolly indulged those fantasies with a grand celebration at her home and the perfect dress.
“I never really felt like I had the wedding that we really wanted,” she says. “He got all dressed up and I got all dressed up. Fifty years is a long time for anything, and I felt that we needed to do something to commemorate this. It’s been a good 50 years and I don’t know how many more years we’ll have left.”
Dolly fans will want to check out the original Netflix movie “Dumplin’,” starring Jennifer Anniston, when it premieres on December 7. The movie revolves around an overweight teen who is a big fan of the singer and the soundtrack includes several of Dolly’s hits with several guests, including Miranda Lambert, Elle King and Mavis Staples joining the star.
