Eric Church and his wife Katherine have been funding different philanthropic efforts through their foundation Chief Cares.

The foundation, which is funded largely through concert ticket proceeds, mostly recently helped more than 500 families in Haiti devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

Now, Church is turning efforts to a cause that affects his mother, Rita Church.

At the JDRF’s Hope Gala in Charlotte, N.C., Eric and Katherine surprised them and the crowd with a $1 million donation to the organization that was honoring his parents — Ken and Rita — with the “Living and Giving Award.”

“I can’t think of a more fitting occasion to make Chief Cares’ largest donation than in honor of my mother and her battle with type 1 diabetes,” said Eric Church.

“Our foundation work and giving to others in need is my absolute favorite thing that we get to do,” adds Katherine. “We are blessed to be a blessing! What a special opportunity it is for us to give through Chief Cares and present this gift tonight to JDRF in honor of Rita to eliminate this disease!”
