Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” might be the most covered song in the history of music, but Eric Church‘s version during a recent show at Red Rocks in Colorado might be one of our favorite versions ever.
And there are a lot of versions.
Actually, the version of the song you’re probably most familiar with is actually Jeff Buckley covering the tune, originally released in 1984 by Cohen. It’s even the subject of a book, “The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley & the Unlikely Ascent of ‘Hallelujah’.” There are over 300 known cover versions of the songs. But, when you think about all the people in the world who have a guitar or piano and then you factor in weddings, funerals and open mic nights at coffee shops, that number jumps up to around 3,459,002 versions.
The passion in Church’s voice and the conviction in his guitar make this an incredible 4 minutes of music, whether you were there or not.
