Typically, when Florida Georgia Line is ready to record new music, they dip into the vast well of music that they have written — sometimes just with each other, often with the prolific community of Nashville songwriters at their fingertips. However, on May 18, they joined the panel of hit writers and producers on NBC’s Songland, including Ester Dean, Shane McAnally and Ryan Tedder, to deepen their pool and add to their resources.
If you haven’t seen Songland yet, the show invites four aspiring songwriters to present an original song of their choosing to Ester, Shane, Ryan and a special celebrity guest. The four are narrowed down to three and they then work with the producers to refine their original piece to present again. The celebrity performer then chooses one winner whose song they will record and release. Lady Antebellum appeared on the show earlier in the season and the song they selected became their new single, “Champagne Night.”
After performing the song in its original form, then working with Shane, who co-wrote songs like Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Backroad” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Rainbow,” rising songwriter, Griffen Palmer from Ontario, Canada, presented the winner — “Second Guessing.”
FGL’s Tyler Hubbard pointed out, “You know he’s a Nashville songwriter when you look at the title and think it’s one thing and then he brings it around and does a little twist on it.”
Shane gushed with praise for the young writer. “Of all the songs we’ve heard on this show, from the beginning, from both seasons, I’ve never been mad at a hook. Luckily, I’ve been in the room when somebody like Kacey Musgraves walks in and says, ‘I want to write a song called ‘Space Cowboy,’ but it’s ‘you can have your space, cowboy.’ And you’re like, thank you Jesus. You just said that in front of me. That is out of this world. How has this not been written?”
