It’s pumpkin spice season again which means it’s also debate season. No, not debates of the Presidential sort, but rather ones of, “I think pumpkin spice should be added to everything!” or “No, pumpkin spice is in too much!”
No matter your position, the one thing we can all agree is that pumpkin spice does taste like fall. But here’s a little secret. Did you know there is no pumpkin in pumpkin spice? It’s true. Zero, nada, zilch. Pumpkin doesn’t even have much flavor. It’s really just a giant orange squash with a taste that is very mild and almost earthy. The pumpkin spice flavor that signals the beginning of fall is actually the perfect blend of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
So just how do you make you own? It’s super easy and you probably have all of the ingredients on hand:
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cloves
Mix all ingredients together with a fork. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
To make pumpkin spice everything, simply add this to anything that you want to have that yummy, pumpkin spice flavor. Think coffee, oatmeal, cookies, pancakes, homemade bread, literally anything you want!
