Jason Aldean was on the stage during the deadliest shooting in American history, which claimed 58 lives and injured more than 500 at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Aldean and his crew were safe, but it’s easily assumed that he’s going to be shaken by what he saw for quite some time. He canceled his shows this weekend to grieve and mourn with his family, but also showed some remarkable resilience by delivering the famous “Saturday Night Live” cold open.

In the last couple of SNL seasons, the cold open has almost always featured Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump.

Aldean’s speech featured nothing about politics or divisive topics.

“This week we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history. Like everyone, I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal. So many people are hurting: they’re our children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends — they’re all part of our family. So I wanna say to them: We hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure we’re gonna walk through these tough times together every step of the way. Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit is unbreakable.”
