During a night that CMT was supposed to celebrate the individual accomplishment of five artists that had big-time, celebration worthy years, they opted for low-key spot moments and instead, turned the attention to fans across the country who are suffering. Namely, Las Vegas shooting victims and the tragic events that took place during the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

As Jason Aldean was set to be honored, Luke Bryan took the stage to not only talk about Aldean’s successful singles, albums and tours, but the fact that he was the one on stage in Las Vegas that night. And he’s the one who has decided to endure and fight on.

Aldean wanted to sing Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” as his performance piece and of course, his friends Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town wanted to join him.

It was a powerful performance with a lot of depth and a lot of meaning. Also, it looked like they were having a little bit of fun up there too.

Since the shooting, Aldean has returned to the stage where he encouraged fans to keep on supporting what they love, “What I want to say is that these people are going to continue to try and hold us down and continue to try and do things to us that are going to make us live in fear and be scared and not go out and do what it is we want to do—whether it’s go to a concert or go to a ball game or go to the mall or go to a movie— and to those people that keep trying to do that I say [email protected]#% you, we don’t really care.”
