Keith Urban is the latest celebrity speaking from experience when it comes to addiction. The Aussie singer is offering up some first-had advice to Demi Lovato, who suffered an overdose at her home in California.
Keith, who has had a well known battle with substance abuse, was asked about his opinion of Demi’s overdose while appearing on the Australian morning show Today Extra.
“I don’t know anything about her personally,” Keith said in the interview before sharing some of his own advice. “Just (to have) good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way if that’s what she wants to do. It’s all up to her.”
Keith struggled with addiction early in his career, checking himself into the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, California, for substance abuse following an intervention conducted by his wife Nicole Kidman, who he married four months earlier in 2006.
He later opened up to Rolling Stone about his addiction saying, “I didn’t seem able to stop. There was no stopping this time. I’d go to sleep, wake up a couple hours later, go at it again, drinking to take the edge off. I remember thinking, ‘I’m probably not going to make it until tomorrow,’” he recalled.
While Keith is not personal friends with Demi, their paths did cross in 2016 when Demi performed her song “Stone Cold” on “American Idol,” when Keith was one of the judges.
