The next winner of “The Voice” will be announced tonight (Dec. 18), and Team Kelly’s Chevel Shepherd proved why she’s a good contender to be crowed Season 15’s winner with her stirring cover of The Judds’ 1986 chart topper, “Rockin’ with the Rhythm of the Rain.” Last night the Top 4 finalist teamed up with her coach, Kelly Clarkson, for a riveting duet that showcased her vocal prowess.
Kicking off the song alone on vocals, Chevel’s smoky voice entranced. The 16-year-old New Mexico native was at ease on stage beside Kelly and held her own with the pop artist. Trading verses and assisting on harmonies, Chevel and Kelly were natural duet partners and gave a memorable performance that would surely be complimented by the Judds.
With hand-clapped rhythms, sultry guitar parts and a voice well beyond her age, Chevel had the studio audience impressed while judge Jennifer Hudson danced along in her chair. Effortlessly segueing from a whispered vocal to a belt, Chevel’s performance had plenty of soul.
One of the youngest contestants on “The Voice,” Chevel first impressed coaches during the Blind Auditions and garnered a four-chair turn. This isn’t her first time auditioning for the reality singing competition. She tried out for Season 13 in Las Vegas but each judge’s team was already full. In 2018, she got a second opportunity to compete when asked to audition again during the Blind Auditions. Could Chevel’s second chance be her time to win the crown? Tune in to NBC Tuesday night when the winner of Season 15 of “The Voice” is revealed.
