Before Kelsea Ballerini stepped on the stage at the CMT Artists of the Year ceremony, she was freaking out. Not only was she being honored at the CMT Breakthrough Artist of the Year, she was honoring Shania Twain with the Artist of a Lifetime Award.
Before the show, she told CMT “I’m going to pass out, I’m going to pass out” when she finally got to meet her. Then, she got super fangirl and said, “I’m going to try and not meet her until I sing for her, so that way she’ll know who I am and be like, ‘oh, you’re a singer.'”
So, imagine Kelsea’s surprise when she took the stage to sing her most recent No. 1 hit and right there, in the audience, Shania Twain was just singing along to “Peter Pan” like she listens to it every single day of her life. Carrie Underwood was also singing along, she was just a little more chill about it.
After the show, Kelsea said of the night, “surreal night. so thankful to have women like these two to look up to and so grateful to be a new part of this family that is country music. Also….that is shania twain.”
