Exclusive First Listen of Kendell Marvel’s “Tryin’ Not To Love You”

-

Songwriter Kendell Marvel is releasing his debut album, Lowdown & Lonesome, on Friday Oct. 13 and the singer/songwriter is giving One Country an exclusive advance listen to one of the album’s tracks, “Tryin’ Not To Love You.”

Marvel, who hails from Southern Illinois, began playing gigs at the age of 10 and turned to songwriting after moving to Nashville in 1998, writing hits for Chris Stapleton, George Strait, Blake Shelton, Gary Allan, Jamey Johnson, and Jake Owen, to name a few.

“Trying Not To Love You,” co-penned by Marvel, Casey Beathard and Chris Stapleton, has a sound reminiscent of Hank Williams Jr and Montgomery Gentry’s southern rock edge.

“I wrote this song with Casey Beathard and Chris Stapleton awhile ago,” Marvel tells One Country. “It laid around a few years and originally was a swampy feeling tune. My producer, Keith Gattis and I decided to change the feel of it and when we were done, it took on this sorta rockabilly vibe. It’s been fun seeing a tune I’ve known and love take on a new identity.”

The hard rocking tune tells the story of a man who is doing everything in his power to stop loving his ex, to no avail.

“Baby alright, baby alright / Come back, I give in, you win, I lose / All stubborn pride aside, this broken heart of mine is making me a fool / Trying not to love you,” he sings in the chorus.

Lowdown & Lonesome contains 10 tracks, 9 of which were co-written by Marvel, that reveal the 43-year-old singer/songwriter’s country and rock & roll roots.
