With the country still in the throes of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the music community has pressed pause on many events, including tours and festivals. However, celebrating the life of Kenny Rogers, who passed away on March 20, wasn’t something that friends, fans and fellow entertainers and CMT wanted to delay. So, on April 8 at 8pm ET on CMT, a talented and diverse collection of singers, songwriters and musicians will honor The Gambler in the special CMT Giants Kenny Rogers: A Benefit for MusiCares.
Dolly Parton, Gavin DeGraw, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, Jennifer Nettles, Lady Antebellum, Lionel Richie, Michael McDonald, Randy Houser, Rascal Flatts, Vince Gill and more have offered their voices through virtual performances and interviews where they’ll recall their own memories of Kenny.
Dolly appeared on Today April 2 and spoke about the passing of her dear friend and duet partner.
“When Kenny passed away, it caught me by surprise. I knew he wasn’t doing well, but it was just like I lost someone so close to me, it broke my heart,” she said. “I was very emotional about it for several days and now I’ve kinda put it in a peaceful place knowing that he’s at peace.”
During the special, viewers will also have the opportunity to donate directly to MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, which was recently established to provide funds to singers, songwriters, musicians and industry professionals who have been affected by cancellations and job losses due to the pandemic.
The show will encore on MTV Live April 10 at 8pm ET and then on CMT April 11 at 12pm ET.
