In October 2017, it will be 25 years since the release of Pure Country, the film in which Kyle Chandler totally pretends to be George Strait, ahem Dusty. So I think it’s time to revisit the beloved country film.
It’s been a few years, so you may not remember the details of George Strait’s film debut. King George plays Dusty Wyatt Chandler, a country singer at the top of his game with a super bossy manager, played by Lesley Ann Warren.
So one day, he decides to talk a walk … and returns to his old life as a cowboy/ranch hand.
What does the bossy manager do? She takes her boyfriend (and wannabe country singer) Buddy Jackson and has him pretend to be Dusty. Yep, she puts him on stage, pumps a lot smoke between him and the audience and has him lip sync to Dusty’s songs. And, yes, Buddy Jackson is none other than Coach Taylor, I mean Kyle Chandler.
Of course, once Dusty finds out he’s pissed and threatens Buddy with all sort of legal action if he doesn’t disappear.
If you haven’t seen it in a while, Pure Country is a precious piece of country music history — and it’s family friendly!
Not to mention, it gave us “Heartland,” “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and “I Cross My Heart”:
