The video, shot earlier this year, was filmed in the town of San Juan, Puerto Rico, which has since been devastated by Hurricane Maria—the strongest storm to hit the area. The people of Puerto Rico continue to suffer without power and are still in need of major help.
As a result of the devastation to the island that provided such a beautiful and vibrant backdrop for the video, Lady A has decided to donate as much awareness and aid as possible to the area.
“We got to meet so many locals and enjoy just everything that Puerto Rico has to offer and so to see all the devastation we are just completely heart broken,” said Scott. “We want to do everything we can to support this incredible place and these incredible people. We just hope and pray for their safety and that rebuilding happens quickly. We encourage everyone to give whatever they can to help.”
“We have always loved traveling to the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico was one of those places that we’ve always wanted to go and couldn’t have been a better location for this video,” added Kelley. “I think one of the coolest things was all of the dancing extras were just people off the street that our director found. They already just exuded that vibrant energy that’s such a part of the people and culture in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean as a whole.”
As the video premieres today, the band will be make a donation of $200,000 from LadyAID—the band’s charity that formed in 2012— to hurricane relief efforts via MusiCares® and United for Puerto Rico.
“We save a portion of every ticket out there on the road to go towards LadyAID,” said Haywood. “After spending time in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we fell in love with the area, the culture, the people, and that country – it was just a beautiful beautiful place. Our hearts have been completely broken watching the devastation from all of these hurricanes. So, for us a band, we’re now personally connected to helping support those affected by the hurricanes.”
The video, directed by Shane Drake, follows a woman who has escaped a bad relationship to start anew by herself on the stunning island. As she frolicks through the spirited streets of Puerto Rico—enjoying her new life—Scott, Kelley and Haywood narrate the video with the lyrics, “I’m single for the summer, I won’t rebound / One lover to another, or be tied down / ‘Til I’m sleeping like a queen in a California king I made (I made, I made) / I think it’s time to take a heart break / I think it’s time to take a heart break.”
While the progression of the video leads us to believe that she meets a new man for what could be a summer fling, there is a twist at the end that takes us back to the unsavory man she originally left. We’ll let you see it for yourself.
