Halloween night is always a highlight on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. The fright night theme is developed in everything, including songs, choreography and costumes. That meant that Lauren Alaina had to trade in one of her signature Halloween onesies for a champagne-colored ball gown and platinum wig as she and professional partner, Gleb Savchenko, danced the Argentine tango to Sarah Vaughan’s “Whatever Lola Wants.”
Filled with flicks, kicks, turns and one great gravity-defying trick, Lauren seemed confident as an undead Marilyn Monroe, even after a mishap on the ballroom floor. Although the judges were filled with praise for their performance, the slip didn’t go unnoticed.
Carrie Ann Inaba told the couple, “You slipped right there, but what you did with that slip blew me away. You were so in character, you were so trusting of Gleb that you went with it, you made it a moment. You saw what you did, the drag as she went to her knees. Your core is getting so strong and what I see with you is true transformation. You’re evolving as a dancer, every minute. Every day.”
“I’m not sure what Lola wants, but I saw plenty of what Lenny wants,” Len Goodman joked. “You were so full of Argentine characterization, I thought that was wonderful. It was such a spirited performance. I thought the two of you sparked off of each other and it was a terrific number. Well done.”
Bruno Tonioli added, “Your performance, at times, was like watching if Marilyn Monroe was a vampire doing an Argentine tango. That’s what it would look like. Brilliant.”
Earning a 27, her highest score yet, there was little time for celebration since the couples had to perform two dances this week, their second being a freestyle number for the season’s first group dance. Divided into two teams — Team Trick and Team Treat — Lauren and Gleb landed on Team Trick dancing to “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell.
In each of the team dances, the celebrities were challenged with breaking away from their professional partners for a short combination that they performed together. Lauren seemed unaffected that Gleb wasn’t by her side and, like her fellow dancers, was confident and energetic.
Judge Len gave them high praise and their performance earned an overall score of 27. That score combined with their individual scores and the viewers’ votes keeps Lauren in for another week. Next week brings on the fiercely competitive Dance Off round.
But what the audience and judges didn’t know was that Lauren Alaina was dancing with a few sore ribs, one known to be fractured.
“I have four hurt ribs,” Lauren said. “All I’ve been trying to do is pretend that my ribs aren’t broken.” When asked if they were in fact broken, Lauren said, ” I fractured the one on the left the first week of the show and I haven’t had these x-rayed (pointing to her right side) but they don’t feel great.”
Way to go, Lauren!
