Lindsay Ell is a Canadian country singer who is currently signed to Stoney Creek Records, home of Thompson Square, Randy Houser and Parmalee. It’s the sister label to Broken Bow Records, which currently boasts Jason Aldean and Dustin Lynch on its roster. She’s released several singles to country radio including, “Trippin’ on Us,” “Shut Me Up” and “By the Way.” None of them have cracked the Top 40. However, lately she’s been getting a lot of heat for dating syndicated radio host, Bobby Bones.

Earlier this month, Ell had a performance canceled last-minute at Sacramento’s KNCI (105.1 FM) reportedly because of her relationship with Bobby. What’s the problem? The Bobby Bones Show appears on iHeartMedia radio stations, like KBEB in Sacramento, which is KNCI’s competition.

Lindsay and Chase Bryant, both of whom are currently opening for Brad Paisley, were both on the bill for KNCI’s performance, but by the morning of the show the former had disappeared from the poster. She posted a message to her fans:

That night, KNCI had released a statement to The Washington Post, calling the move a “bad decision” and stating, “Lindsay is an amazingly talented, up-and-coming artist and today we regrettably made a bad decision to cancel her show. We only hope that she — and our listeners — will forgive us, and that Lindsay and her team will allow us to reschedule the show.”

According to Bobby, this isn’t the first time Lindsay has been discriminated against for their relationship. On June 19, during a 10-minute segment on his show the jock indicated that he and Lindsay had been told by 13 terrestrial and nonterrestrial programmers that they wouldn’t play her music because of their relationship, Billboard reports. Bobby also asserted that no station would have canceled a show by a male artist in the same situation.

Lindsay tells “E! News” she debated sharing details of her relationship specifically for this reason.

“We’ve been best friends for a long time, a little over a year ago we were both scared about publicly saying we were dating,” she said. “But eventually I reached the point that I was like, country music is a beautiful industry because they embrace humans being humans. They embrace artists being able to have a personal life and don’t let it come in the way of their career.”

The songstress wanted to be honest with her fans and let them know what (or who) her songs are actually about (or aboot).

“There [have] been stations that said they didn’t want to play my music because I was dating Bobby,” she admitted. “I really feel that as an artist, male or female, your personal life shouldn’t affect what you do.”

As a result, you may not see a lot about her boyfriend on social media because of “competitive markets” — cities where Bobby is on a competing radio station.

“I do my best so I’m not flaunting our relationship so that in a competitive market they don’t need to worry about fans falling in love in my music, checking me out on social media and then figuring out about the other morning show across the street,” she said.
