For the second year in a row, Lori McKenna walked away from the Nashville Songwriters Association International Awards with the top prize. This year, she took home all by herself, with “Humble and Kind.” (Last year, “Girl Crush” took home the honor, which was a co-write with Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose.)
Tim McGraw took McKenna’s “Humble and Kind” to No. 1 on the charts and the tune is featured on his Damn Country Music and McKenna’s recent The Bird & The Rifle album. The honor and the chart position is especially rare, as “Humble and Kind” is the first song to reach No. 1 with just one writer since 2012’s “Ours” by Taylor Swift.
McKenna took the stage to sing her hit, which left most of the songwriters in the audience in awe.
After the award was announced, McGraw took to Instagram to congratulate McKenna.
