If you’ve been listening to a lot of country radio lately and haven’t heard the line, “And I ain’t gotta see my / Ex-future-mother-in-law anymore,” you’re really missing out. The hilarious and well-timed line is from Luke Combs‘ “When It Rains It Pours” and the rest of the tune is like something out of a ’90s country music storybook.
Combs begins the tune with a story about his girl coming home “Bitchin’ and moanin’ on and on / ‘Bout the time I had” and though it seems like a curse, it’s actually a blessing because he ends up winning “a hundred bucks on a scratch-off ticket” and “a four day 3 night beach vacation / Deep sea senorita fishing down in Panama.” Not to mention– he got that great parking spot at Hooters.
“When It Rains It Pours” is the follow up single to his No.1 hit “Hurricane” from his No.1 album This One’s For You. Combs admits that thanks to his co-writer, the tone of the song changed from what Luke originally intended to write it as “I had the title in my phone, and my co-writer said, ‘man that sounds like a super depressing song,’ and that was kind of the idea when I came in the room with it. And he said ‘why don’t we make it a fun song?’ so we kind of wanted to make it this fun kind of break up thing, that people could sing along with and kind of laugh at, but also, you know, relate to.”
The video definitely matches up with the lyrics and gives you something to laugh at.
Not to mention– Combs had more fun filming the video than one could imagine.
