Maddie & Tae act out the storyline to their latest single, “Friends Don’t,” in the new music video for the song. The three-minute clip was shot in Nashville with director TK McKamy and finds the duo at a party together with two possible love interests.
“To us ‘Friends Don’t’ feels sexy and confident, but with a dash of that uncertainty you have at the start of a relationship because you don’t know if the other person feels the same way you do,” Taylor Dye says in a statement. “We wanted to play off that push and pull we’ve all felt before.”
This push and pull is shown throughout the music video as Maddie can be seen texting her guy friend throughout the night while the two are at a house party. Asking him if he wants to leave soon, she gets no reply but that doesn’t mean he’s not interested. In fact, it’s the exact opposite as he is spotted filming her and other party guests throughout the evening on his video camera.
“We both got to do a little acting and play out separate storylines with a love interest,” Maddie Marlow adds. “It was pretty outside of the box for us to act, so we just tried to have fun with it.”
“Friends don’t call you in the middle of the night / Couldn’t even tell you why / They just felt like saying hi / Friends don’t stand around playing with their keys / Finding reasons not to leave / Tryin’ to hide their chemistry,” Maddie & Tae sing on the song’s infectious chorus.
Later, Tae is spotted with another guy at the party and the two retreat to the roof together. Her man is pulled away by another friend, leaving her alone and questioning their future. His feelings become clear when he drives her home later that night and grabs her hand to pull her in for a kiss. Watch each relationship unfold in the video below.
“Friends Don’t” is the lead single off Maddie & Tae’s forthcoming sophomore album. The release is their first on Universal Music Group, after parting ways with Big Machine Label Group.
